西風是西方傳統角度上最怡人的風向，《西風之神澤菲羅歸來》中引用了不少希臘神話去描繪春天的美好景致，同時亦能發現黯然神傷的痕跡：普魯絲妮和菲勒美拉同是雅典公主，普魯絲妮嫁了給色雷斯的國王泰諾斯為妻，泰諾斯覬覦菲勒美拉的美色，把她困在森林裡，並割去她的舌頭，後來姊妹二人復仇，最終普魯絲妮變成了麻雀，菲勒美拉變成了夜鶯。故此，夜鶯常常在藝術作品中擔當悲劇的象徵。
West wind is the mildest wind direction in Western tradition. In “Zefiro torna”, with the help from some Greek lengends, beautiful sceneries of spring are vividly described. At the same time, one can also discover traces of melancholy: Progne and Filomena were princesses of Athens. Progne married King Tereus of Thrace. Coveted the beauty of Filomena, Thereus trapped her in a forest and cut her tongue off. The two princesses took revenge. Eventually Progne turned into a sparrow and Filomena turned into a nightingale. That is why nightingale usually symbolizes tragedy in arts.

Monteverdi composed 2 madrigals with similar names. The 5-voice a cappella is the setting of a sonnet by Francesco Petrarch while the duet was is the setting of Ottavio Rinuccini’s. You will hear joyful voices bloom like flowers. But do you know what is the story underneath?
