
爵士樂人的禪意:Gary Peacock的訪問
這是一篇對我藝術哲學方面很有啟發的訪問,受訪大師是Gary Peacock,曾是Miles Davis樂隊的一員,亦即是著名Standards Trio的bass手。Gary Peacock的人生很傳奇,訪問中提到,在1964年,他對音樂的執着令到情緒出現問題,要用到酒精及毒品舒緩。他有一次食了藥物LSD,不幸命懸一線,大難不死後,卻有所頓悟,放下音樂,走到日本進行音樂外的靈性之旅,對音樂與自己的關係有了新的體悟:「I saw that I had realized I wasn't a musician. That was something I had made up in my mind; it was something I did, but it wasn't who I was.」
事隔十年,Gary Peacock以新的心境重回音樂圈,將禪修的悟境帶到音樂觀念上:「The question is, how much are you willing to give up to play this music? I don't think it can work if you still have an agenda, if you feel you still need to prove something musically. That's not the point—it's just about the music...You approach the music from that standpoint, rather than as a vehicle for your technique or your self-expression. Creativity is not the point. It's just about the music.」
排除多餘的我念,將音樂「純粹視為音樂」地追求,看似容易,實質是難度至高的慧境。
